I’ve been a bit derelict in directing the class so here’s a step back into the river of learning with a recap of something I found last year.

This video was neat. After introduced to creating videos to put on youtube, I paid a lot of attention to the transition effects and how the video clips, text, and pictures were integrated into the video. I liked how older clips were used, as well as up to date clips.
This video was educational regarding politics of terror. It mentioned areas of terror, showed troops working to fight terror, and it showed some of the ways our armies are educated to ensure our freedom.
There were some very interesting quotes within this video. I particularly liked the one by Thomas Jefferson that ended with “the remedy is not to take the power from them, but to inform them by education.” No matter what we do, we must be educated by some means…We need to stay up to date regarding the matters in this world because it effects us all….we all make a difference!

I enjoyed the video. I thought it brought to life some very important facts that some people tend to overlook. I also enjoyed the quotes throughout the clip. I agree with Kim with the Thomas Jefferson quote, education is the way to possibly prevent future problems and contain current ones. But without getting in to a political debate I will leave it at that.

I enjoyed the video, and like Jason–I will leave the political asspect alone. However, I realy liked the feelings that this video created in me. The sound, pics, speed, clips…all of it, gave me distinct feelings of panic. As I watched and remembered certain moments from the film, emotions were remembered. I thought this video was very well made!

This was a well put together video. The video is similar to propagand techniques used in WWI and WWII. The video is using images, text and sound to get you to think a certain way. The clips showed other individuals trying to persaude people to think a certain way. Fear is often the number one target of propaganda. If you fear or hate something you are much more likely to take a strong stance opposing it. Take a look at some political cartoons or posters during WWII and you will see what I mean. The video was put together well, although the author is wrong about one thing. The author says in the description that fear erodes our democracy. The fact is their is no democracy to erode. America is not a democracy nor has it ever been one. True democractic governments have not worked historically. Our form of government is a Republic, which is different than a democracy. We pledge to the Republic for which it stands. This is really one of those things that aggrivate me. Many social studies books and content strands will refer to the United States as a democracy which is false. There are some democratic principals in our society but it is not a democracy. So the video is effective but its thesis is wrong, it fear may erode our freedoms but not our democracy. Also if you think fear isn’t strong enough to erode freedom just read upon on Japanese Internment Camps during WWII. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_American_internment
That is reason for fear, an entire population having its rights taken away.

I loved the old pictures, and I loved the quote byPaulo Freire that said “Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate intigration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system, and brings about conformity………or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which young men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.” This quote made me stop the video and think. And after thinking about the quote, my thoughts were more of hope than I had been having…..hope about the future of our world.

I thought this video was interesting. After creating my own video I think that I appreciate it more. I thought that they photos were appropriate and thought provoking. I also thought that the quotes from President Bush were powerful, too. I especially liked when it pointed out the role of the president as being to keep us free, not safe as quoted by President Bush. This contradiction was further pointed out with the quote from President Bush swearing in. Very interesting and thought provoking.
I was a little distracted from what I think the important message. It seems like a person was supposed to understand the importance of being informed about our government and society was important. I was a little distracted by my own thoughts the war, the purpose of the war, and the role of the president in our lives.
Over all I liked the video, even if my mind went somewhere else with it.
oh, I also like the message about how emotional language is simplistic to keep it powerful. If you have to reflect on what somethign means, then it looses its power. It seems like a simple, but overlooked thought. Very interesting.

We have had enemies and terroristic threats for years, we just didn’t hear about them. Now with technology we see more than ever of the danger that surrounds us. Sometimes I wonder if we see and know too much. The people that make videos threatening the US don’t accidentally let the videos get in our hands. They want us to watch them and put fear in us. People think they are informed about what is going on in the world, but we still don’t know even half of it. I personally liked the video and I think that anyone that views it will have their own opinion of what it means. I think that as teachers we need to teach our students how to look past propoganda and dig in to find the true meaning. We can’t believe everything we see and hear, but if some people hear it on tv or read it on the internet they believe it.

In terms of video production I thought the music and images were thought invoking. I found that the print suggesting emergency plans and terror was an example of how the government keeps threats and danger in our minds constanly. I think images like this entice fear and makes a part of society want protection.
