I don’t use Powerpoint. I don’t attend lectures that use PowerPoint. I don’t visit online presentations of SlideShare that play PowerPoints for me. To find out how I really feel about it, read Why PowerPoint is Evil.

I have a better understanding of your concerns for PowerPoint. Knowing how to create a PowerPoint presentation doesn’t make you a technological wizard. Creating a website is more impressive to me. I am know coming to grips with the fact that I have abused PowerPoint and will try to limit my usage in the future. Students need exposure to different tools to use to replace PowerPoint would be much better. Although, I do understand the dilemma that faces many teachers worrying more about content than learning different forms of technology. But, we need to make a change and it can start small and work its way up to something bigger.

You are right on time with this. I have literally been on the phone this week, thinking about ordering dreamweaver to use in my Webdesign class. You may have saved me losts of money. Great post. I have used powerpoint for a while but have never liked it and have always wanted to use something else. Thanks for giving me the tools to make the change. Now magically give the time to do it!

I absolutely agree with your list of five ways to use PowerPoint correctly. I work with the Upward Bound Math Science program at Morehead State in the summer. Our students are required to make a PowerPoint presentation to “discuss” their projects. I find that many of them use it like a book report, writing complete sentences, instead of a cue card to prompt them on what to present. May I have permission to give your five rules to the teachers who work with the students preparing the presentations to make them more effective?

Comedian Don McMillan must have read the original post:

I use both the Phaedrus post and McMillan’s video when my 8th grade students start using ppt for specific projects. The combination of humor and logic seems to speak volumes to them, and I see an almost immediate improvement in their projects.

Phaedrus, I hope you’ll be available for an online visit with the new batch of kids soon.
