Mea Culpa
When I heard about blog tracks a year ago, I thought this might be an interesting way to get a group of people to do two things:
- Learn more about the advantages of “getting out of the company town”
- Get a blogging habit.
Didn’t happen. I think I was the reason.
In the first place, I wasn’t able to get enough people on board with the idea to get a critical mass of conversation going. Several folks volunteered to be in the group but when it came time to actually do it, reality won over intent. As a victim of reality this week myself, I’m very sympathetic. My inability to garner sufficient support for this idea was, however, instrumental in not really getting it rolling.
In the second place, I wasn’t able to clearly communicate to the group exactly what it was I wanted them to write about. On its face, it seems clear enough to me — explore the affordances of owning your own domain and write about that exploration in your blog. We approached that in various ways — from “hanging out your shingle” to “how could I use these tools in my practice” but the conversation never really got started.
In the last place, I wasn’t able to write enough. As the submitter for this blog track proposal, it was up to me to push the rock up the hill and I failed to do that.
Thanks to Ward Cates for letting me try and thanks to my Blog Track partners — Mike Barbour, Rick West, and Paige Worrell — for trying it out.
